Board game a breeze Nintendo 64: 1080 Snowboarding A little late in the season but here it is, Nintendo's highly-anticipated snow- boarder. It was worth the wait. This game is great! Superb gr. aphics -- We expect noth: ing less on an N64 — fluid motion and attention to detail Gike the physics of weather). Gameplay? It’s a breeze ically, Nor so mach simple as it ts intuitively familiar. Datties and stiffics just feel right. The analogue chum. thingy scems — designed specifically for this game, so smooth and friendly it is. Definitely a learn more/go nowhere tide (there are only six levels that | know of) but that’s the point -— the better vou get, the ber- ter utilized a fmiliar course. This i+ probably the cream of the snowbearding crop, though Saturn's Steep Slope Sliders plays just as nice, the combination of look, feel and detail makes 1080 the winner by a nosy-grab or two, Great rental. Good purchase. Playstation: Final Fantasy Tactics The Final Fantasy family fortifies it’s stronghold with this clever, hands-on RPG. Unlike the rest of the planet, E was nota big fan of FF7 simply because RPGs are not my cup ef mead — tuo much drivel and not cnough gameplay for me. The convoluted plots make tor great afternoon svap-operas but always Manage to seem silly in this genre. While Tactics spews out more chan its share of dialogue boves that scroll along at a snails pace, it does offer some exiz- ing hands-on game play and intuitive thinking. Control characters’ decision making as they scheme and plot their next few meves during cach battle sequence. Not just “attack with sword” com- mands here. Plot a move here, pause dramatically, strike a blow here and here. Of course, if your foe has ourmanocu- vred you, you hearty blow may just as well end up striking thin air. Too bad. Learn better tactics. Also, vou carn “job” points to round out characters’ abilities. Pretty cool, bur a fitde aggravating for as you became berter/ stronger/faster, so do your enemies so vou always remain average in the grand scheme cf things. Great rental. Good purchase. Nintendo 64: FI Pole Position I've played so many difter- ent racers that it is getting difficult to cell chem apart. While c's hardly unique, FI stands out for its real- ism ino that all my usual tactics -- Le. taking a short cut off read, slam- ming my competitors, ete. — scem to be 3 real detriment to my driving. Go fig- ure. It looks so big, cool and completely average, I just assumed iz was a free-for- all racer. Took me a while to figure out that pit stops were erecial and required and even longer to feazn how to pull into the pit before 1 zipped by ir. Reluctantly resorted to a semi-auro- matic transmission as the usual floored- in-high-gear/drop-"er-inco-first, arcade technique had 4 nasty effect en my tran- ny. Semi-auto mode is like having a tutor on board. Technique requires a idle more attention and makes tor a better long: term gaming experience. So F1 is as much a racing-sim as it is a racer, which puts at in the lower end of an upper class genre. Good rental. Good purchase eee Top Rentals: 1. SaGa Frontier (Psx) 2. Quake (N64} 3.
