Business built on collected resumes tan Noble News Reporter jan@nsnews.com VICTORIA’S Employment Standards Branch is investigat- ing an “employment” company that has been the subject of complaints to the government and Better Business Bureau. Although Employment — Services Canada has received a lot of negative pub- ticity, the company continues to seck busi- ness, Employment Services Canada faxed the North Shore News Feb. 12 asking the newspaper to gather its Sunused or unwanted” resumes and forward them to Employment Services Canada. The company offers to pay a buck for cach resume “donated” and does it under the guise of getting Canadians emploved. “This program is one for conscientious Employers who would like to see Canada’s populous back toa work!” said the form letter sent to the News. But Better Business Bureau (BBB) general manager Valerie MacLean has been getting a different story, Maclean said tha, businesses that have placed help- wanted ads in newspapers have been solictted for resumes by Employment Services Canada. The BBB said consumers have also complained that Employment. Services Canada places ads in newspapers for cleri- cal and technical positions. Consumers fay in resumes and are then called in by Employment Services Canada for an interview. When interviewed, the job seeker is told that Employment Services Canada is an employment network and then asked to pur the resume inte a data- base for a tee of $176.33 for a one-vear period.
