Census ahead

CENSUS REPRESENTA-
TIVES will distribute over
2.5 million census question-
naires to households in
British Columbia and the
Yukon, beginning on May 6.

Eighty per cent of house-
holds will receive the short
census questionnaire, which
has a total of seven questions
on topics including’ age, sex,
marital status and mother
tongue.

naire, which will take about
25 minutes to complete, is
delivered to one in five house-
holds.

The long questionnaire
asks for more detailed infor-

mation about the household
and the people living there,
such as ethnic origin, educa-
tion, income and labor market
activities. Information pro-
vided by this portion of the
population can then be gener-
ally applied to the whole pop-
ulation.

This long form sampling
technique helps reduce the
cost of the census and the
response burden on house-
holds, while providing a more
detailed picture of Canadians,
