hawshank portrays dark life on the inside |: Violence, desperation anda glimmer of hope _ The Shawshank Redemption *kx (Columbia) Rated Mature (at the Cineplex Odeon cins- mas) RAT'S THE ditfer- ence between an RRSP and an RIP? One’s a plan; the other's a plot. Banker Andy Duphrene (Tim Robbins) ’ knows. An unfaithful wife, booze and a loaded .45 sent him to Shawshank Prison for wo life terms. And back in the mid-’40s, life really meant life. Shawshank is a lot like other Big House pictures. It comes with violence, desperation and the occasional glimmer of hope. Of course, there has to be The Wicked Warden, in this case zealot Warden Norton (Bob Gunton) and his goosestepping guards. Regular beatings by a vicious gang force Andy to build a pro- wective ring. He befriends anoth- er lifer, Ellis Boyd “Red” Redding (Morgan Freeman) who can scrounge an nything for a price. Andy finds that a convicted murderer who offers sound financial advice has a lot of Tim Bell FILM REVIEW friends, right on up to the war- den who moves him from the prison laundry to financial laun- dering. Writer/director Frank Darabont makes an impressive debut showing the grey world of life on the inside. Great acting, especially by Robbins and Freeman, also helps. James Whitmore has a plum role as the aging prison librarian, Brooks, who gets his walking papers efter 50 years in the slammer. His short bow- legged steps and befuddled reac- tions at the whir of city life offer the most memorable image. Although a little draggy in spots, the movie benefits from a script that closely follows one of Stephen King’s best stories. The characters smack of fa siliarity, but there are enough plot twists to keep us amused. There’s a lot of brutality, but with King’s trademark dark humor and satisfying irony, this is a jail visit that won’t make you stir crazy. Terminal Velocity xx (Holly- wood Pictures) Rated Mature (at Famous Players cinemas) Charlie Sheen’s career is real- ly plummeting. But a nice kind of plummeting. He's “Ditch” Brody, a hot- shot skydiver dealt a blow when a first-time jumper (Natassja Kinski) takes a fata! plunge. Or does she? Ditch finds out the K.G. used- to-Bs are up to no good, threat- ening a new Cold War and only Yankee know-how can bail the world out. The two-word title says it all. It’s action; fast, loud and dumb. Anyone who has been speon-fed TV formula can predict exactly what's going to happen. Charlie coasts along in his undemanding roie, hut shares zero chemistry with Kinski. But with cars dropping from planes, mid-air rescues, and more than a few computer-gen- erated special effects, you get your money’s worth of stunts and action.
