Three products are most com-
monly used as dormant sprays.

Dormant or light oil is a highly
refined petroleum product that is
non-toxic to most deciduous ‘
plants.

. Oil works as an insecticide by
coating the egg, larvae or adult
“and stopping the flow of oxygen,
thereby causing suffocation,

To work effectively the plants
heed a very light but uniform
coverage, ensuring that all pests
: hiding in cracks i in the bark are
coated. . -

_~ Lime siiiphur and fixed copper,
the other two products, are both

fungicides. .

Lime and’sulphur are pre-mixed

and sold asa solution that.can be

mixed with water i in a pressure

Copper comes as a wettable
powder. and is also mixed with
water before spraying.’

“If you plan to use any of these

_ products, be sure to read the in-
structions and limitations put out
by the manufacturer.’

To ensure that.your Spraying is

effective, start from the centre of
the tree and spray outward and
then move around the tree spray-
ing inward. This will allow both
sides of the branches to be coated
from top to bottom.

Use a safe ladder for taller trees
as the trunk and branches become ~
very wet and slippery.

Avoid spraying buildings and
sidewalks.

A two-gallon plastic pressure
sprayer is the most effective piece
of equipment to use for the job.
Do not use a hose attachment as
they are much too erratic in their
rate of delivery.

Finding an appropriate time to
do the spraying is always a prob-
lem because you need two or three
days without frost or rain.

A heavy rainstorm immediately
after the spraying will greatly
reduce the effectiveness of the
spray.

If you have not done any
spraying before and are not sure
of the amount to mix, it is always
best to mix half of what you think
