For the second time this year, ICBC and local police are urging drivers to lock it or lose it. During the weex of Nov. 4 to V1, the police will increase en- forcement and encourage the public to report suspicious activi- ties and protect’ themselves. High-risk areas such as park- and-ride facilities, shopping malls and sporting arena parking Jots will be targeted in the campaign. The police will be on the look out for vehicles that offer a thief valuables such as cameras, cellular telephones and money left in view. Crime prevention notices, outlining how not to be a victim, will be distributed and teft on vehicles. Said ICBC spokesman Kim King, ‘‘These crimes continue to drive up our insurance premiums. They are tying up our police ser- vices and clogging our legal system. “For the first nine months of this year, the corporation has paid over $52 million in theft-related claims. We must take responsibili- ty for protecting ourselves."" ICBC statistics for the first nine months of 1992 show 477 theft of auto claims were reported for the period. Close to $2 million was paid out for the local losses. North Shore theft from auto Stolen guitars returned after article THE MUSIC sounded as if it were over for the local band Freeway Persuasion when its members had three of their guitars stolen out of their van just prior to a gig in North Vancouver. But an Oct. 9 North Shore News article detailing the band’s plight helped the musicians regain their customized axes, valued at over $6,000. **Rob (Darch) got a call from a guy who said he had read the ar- ticle in the News and immediately realized the guitars he had bought the day before were ours,"’ said band member Chris Garnier. “*He showed up a few minutes tater with all three guitars, not a mark on any of them." The Good Samaritan refused any of the reward moncy the band had offered for the return of its guitars. He would say only that he bought the guitars from someone he didn’t know.
