8 - Wednesday, August 12, 192 ~ North Shore News MAILBOX Public transit can’t meet travel needs Dear Editor: 1 read the letter from Hugh Nevin in your Aug. 2 paper advis- ing the people of Vancouver to “take the bus.”’ Mr. Nevin appears to want to turn back the clock to an era when people didn’t have (the freedom to drive and had to rely on public transit. However, reality is that the automobile population in Vancouver is growing faster than the human population and almost every person of driving age gets a driving licence and buys a car. The main reason we see more and more cars is that our lives are now much more complex than they were even 20 vears ago. When we go out it is usuaily to make calls at several destinations. A typical day might be, for ex- ample, drop the kids off to swimming, do the grocery shop- ping, visit the doctor, meet a friend for lunch, then pick up the kids again on the way home. No public transit’ system, no matter how efficient, can ever meet these multiple destination travel requirements of the modern family. Only the automobile can do the job. 1 just wish we had available to- day the forward thinking planners who built Second Narrows Bridge and the freeway to Abbotsford thirty years ago. They made sure the capacities of the systeni they built would last 30 years. The reason Mr. Nevin sees to- day's new bridges and highways filling up as soon as they open is that we now always build to meet a crisis instead of for the future. Forward planning in 1992 should mean tripling the lanes on the freeway and building a ten~lane crossing of the harbor. Finally, the car is not going to go away. Car dealerships are not going to go away, and people are going to drive in even greater numbers. We have to work on and with the auto makers to build cleaner-running vehicles, and with Our governments to ensure that they build roads capable of hand- ling our requirements. Vancouver, please don’t catch the bus. The taxpayer subsidy to transit is already close to $300 million per year. Let’s use the Money on road improvements in- stead.
