anniversary
with bursary

Shore Council of an inter-
national cultural organiza-
tion that boasts 250,000
female and two male
members do to cciebrate its
anniversary?

Help students complete their
education at Capilano College, the
chapter has decided.

To celebrate the 25th anniver-
sary of the North Shore Council
of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority,

members have contributed more
than $2,600 10 the Capilano Col-
lege Foundation.

The contribution will establish at
bursary for Canadian students
with financial need. Priority wiil
be given to sorority. members,
their children or grandchildren.

“We hope that this will help the
students achieve whatever goals
they have decided on,’ said In-
abeth Armitage, who chaired the
Beta Sigma Phi committee that
spearheaded the bursary.

couver Council 25 years ago. To-
day there are 250 Beta Sigma Phi
members on the North Shore.
They are active in community
work, supporting organizations
such as Emily Murphy House and
Presentation House.

The cultural, social and service
sorority “as founded in 1931 by
Walter W. Ross of Kansas City,
Missouri.

“Ross was a feminist,’ said
Armitage. ‘In the heart of the
Depression there were very few
cultural outlets for women. No-
body cared one way or another

what women were doing as long
as they didn’t make any noise and
looked after the children and the
home. This man had foresight and
knew women needed more than
that."

Teday his sons. Jack and Bill
Ross, are presidents of the sorori-
ty.

The sorority is having its
Northwest Regional Convention at
Whistler in May 1994. The North
Shore Council hopes to present its
first Capilano College bursary at
