NAILI OX Doug Collins a true rara avis Dear Editor: Your column defending Doug Collins’ right to express his point of view was nice but you appear to have ignored the point of what Collins is all about. I doubt Doug Collins would thank me for this and I wouldn’t expect it of him yet, if there was a category and there was the slightest chance of him accepting it, 1 would support his nomination and selection for whatever is Canada's current highest recogni- tion/award. In spite of all the things Collins’ critics call him, he is in the truest sense a rara avis or, in the Collins vernacular, a man (still) with Picture demands Dear Editor: The caption under the stark photo of Friday’s (Dec. 6) front page reads: ‘‘A North Vancouver man made a grim discovery..." And hundreds of children who faithfully deliver this community newspaper to “every door on the North Shore’ were forced to discover that naked cadaver not once but hundreds of times. What purpose was served by the selection of that photo? What reverence for life, what considera- tion imparted to the unknown loved enes of the deceased? And capturing the smiling faces of rescue workers at the scene does _ Rot do justice to their families ei- - ther, In July, 1990 the North Shore News front. page presented the Horseshoe Bay vehicle tragedy - with an appropriate photo, the solemn faces of attending West Vancouver firefighters, the smashed family van, BUT NO BODIES. You maintained the vic- tim’s dignity and-that of the fami- lies whose husbands and sons must look upon death. The Lynn Creek photo demands a public apology. “Nancy Beatty ‘West Vancouver balis. When it comes down to it nei- ther ‘‘homos,’* ror lesbians, nor gutless limp wri.icd men (?) like it or not, can deny Collins’ column is widely read by a tor of honest men and women. Further, this same lot cannot deny that a lot of these same honest men and women nominated him for the job of rep- resenting them as their federal member of parliment and for good reason; Collins is an honest man, nothing more and nothing Jess! Even more simply put, Collins personifies the ancient axiom that the truth herts. Thank God for that and one rara avis! L.
