Enriching & Strengthening family life on the North Shore. 988-5281 THE HOLIDAY party ‘season is a time when many peo- — ple are tempted to drive.after drinking, but the alter- natives to ~ and consequences of — drinking and driv- ing should make that temptation easy to avoid. There are a variety of designated drivers to choose from: a fellow party-goer:-who abstains, a friend or fam- ily member who was not at a party, a cab driver, or a B.C. transit driver. Choosing a non-drinking designated driver from ainong your companions can make for a simple and in- expensive solution to the problem of getting home after a holiday season outing. Many licenced establishments offer designated driver programs where one person in a group will be served an unlimited number of free soft drinks or coffee, if they consume no alcohol. But, if you and yours prefer to have the option of’ drinking alcohol during the festivities, be sure to call a friend for a ride, call a taxi or take public transit. B.C. Transit spokesman Scott MacFarlane points out that all buses (including West Vancouver biue buses), the SkyTrain and the SeaBus will be free from 5 p.m. Dec. 31 until 8 a.m. Jan. 1, with services being increased to accomimodate extra passengers. Last year more than 170,000 people chose transit for their New Year’s Eve Gesignated driver. Regular day-time service will be in place with. SkyTrain and SeaBus hours extended to after 3 a.m. Ex- tra buses will be availabie to handle the overload. . The costs or inconvenience of depending on alternate - transportation sources are dwarfed by the casts still paid provincially to enforce drunk driving laws and the price paid by victims of drinking drivers. Cpl. Larry Atkinson of the North Vancouver Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said enforcing the laws through holiday season road checks has he!ped to reduce the number of alcchol-related injuries in car ac- cidents. But, he added, even though people are not fegally im- paired until their blood alcohol level has reached .08%, the RCMP would prefer to see drivers who have con- sumed no alcohol. Drinking Driving Counterattack is a proactive preven- tion program aimed at pointing out the consequences of drunk driving, such as the effects of alcohol on your ability to drive. Their statistics show that we do have a problem in this province: @ one out of every five people in B.C. jails is a con- victed drunk driver, @ 6,000 people are injured annually in drinking driving accidents, and @ 200 people are killed annually as a result of alcohol- related accidents. ° The responsibility for eliminating drunk driving lies not only with the individual who drinks, but with the server or the host. | Thank you for your patronage. We hope to see you again, so please drink responsibly.
