For some people, good grooming is as simple as keeping themselves neat and clean. For others it means a detailed regimen of cleanliness, cosmetics and hair care appliances. But the very things that help you look your best can cause serious burns and even serious fires. The District of North Van- couver Fire Department wants you to have a beautiful day, but they also want you to be safe. Hair dryers and styling appli- ances such as heated curlers, styl- ing combs or curling irons can be safe if used properly. But like any electrical device, they can start fires if overheated or left unat- tended, and can cause serious. electrical burns or fatal shocks if improperly used. Because hair care equipment is often used in bathrooms near HOT TIPS North Vancouver District Fire Department sinks and bathtubs, it is extremely important to be especially careful that the appliances do not come in contact with water. If one drops into water do not touch it until you have shut off power at the circuit. Many new homes have special bathroom circuits that automatically trip the circuit breaker if this happens. Even if the appliance was not in use or even plugged in when it was ex- posed to water, discard it and replace it. Do not ‘‘let it dry out’’ and use it again. Never dip curling irons or styling combs in water to dampen hair. Even when rushing to get ready before going out, avoid the temp- tation to let curling irons warm up while you do something else in another room. These appliances Pruning techniques for THE FOLLOWING is a question posed to the Canadian Garden Council by a reader. Laura Jones of Toronto writes asking us to clarify ‘‘the recom- mended pruning procedure for the ‘everbearing’ raspberries — such as the cultivar Heritage.’* She has heard “‘various divergent ideas.”’ The Canadian Garden Council responds that there are only two basic ways to prune the ever-bear- ing raspberry bushes. The first is to prune in the same manner as the summer-bearing regular rasp- berry bushes. These are pruned ei- ther in late autumn, or very early - spring leaving only approximately eight or nine young canes (which have not yet produced fruit) per 30 cin (one foot) of running row. All canes that produced fruit are ‘removed, and only this reduced number of: young canes left. This helps reduce disease infection and allows sun to reach al! fruit pro- duced. The same pruning technique may be applied to the ever-bearing types as well. In addition, prune off the tops of the canes that produced the summer fruit. How- ever, most growers agree the bet- ter method of pruning these plants overheat very easily, can slip into contact with flammable materials, and can be too easily forgotten. Find a ‘‘memory jogger’’ trick that will help you remember always to unplug such appliances before leaving the house. You do not want to ccme home to find the fire department has already been there! Do not set hair dryers down while they are running. Their vibrations can cause them to fall, leading to a fire. And do not let the air vents get blocked while the dryer- is operating. Those vents must bring cool air into the motor to prevent overheating that can start a fire. If an appliance does not seem to be working properly, discard it. Especially if you detect an elec- trical burning odor, replace the appliance. Never poke hairpins or wire into openings in the equip- ment. Children, too, about their appearance, are concerned but raspberries is to cut the entire row down to ground level in late autumn or very eariy spring. This means there will be no “summer crop,”’ but an even larger autumn crop at a time when the berries are even more costly and valuable!
