Driving with low beams is a
proven accident-preventer

LAST WEEK’S column began our lock at safe driving tips
for the summer with a review of what needs checking on
your vehicle. This weck, it’s your turn, as we consider the
biggest safety challenges you face behind the wheel.

As you plan your holiday, take
a step back to see if you're trying
to cram 23 days of trip into 21
days of time off. Of course, the
point we’re making here relates to
things like speeding, and its rela-
dives: tailgating and unsafe passing
and the problem of trying to drive
when everyone’s really too tired to
* go on. Some holiday!

Pian your trip so that you can
take frequent rest stops. If you
look for them, there are many
beautiful little spots along any
road in B.C. that are just perfect
for lunch or for stretching your
legs for a few minutes. Let the
kids burn off a little energy by
pitching a few rocks into the
water and snapping a few pictures
for the family album.

Speaking of the kids, high-tech
diversions like hand-held video
games help pass time on the road.

things like coloring books, reading
books and games like traffic
bingo. Still, if you are having to
referee a scrap in the back seat
every few minutes, it’s a good sign
that part of your group is ready
for a break.

Distractions caused by restless
passengers, changing tapes or try-
ing to sightsee and drive at the
same time are the cause of many

holiday accidents.

Naturally, everyone needs to be
buckied up. if you have a
youngster that rides in a child
restraint, make sure that the seat
is properly installed with the
tether straps at the top securely
fastened to the frame of your
vehicle. As we mentioned last
week, it’s important that passen-
gers in motcr hemes. campers,
vans or pick-ups sit in areas des-
ignated for them. Riding in the
cargo areas or in sleeping com-
partments over the cab is danger-
ous.

Drive with your low beams on,
even during the daytime. This
makes you more visible and is a
proven accident-preventer.

Keep your eye on the other
motorists and practice defensive
driving. When it comes right
down to it, you can’t trust others
on the road to behave in a sane
and sensible way. Kecp a safe fol-
lowing distance — at least two se-
conds in good weather, four or
more in poor conditions and if
you're in a siower-moving vehicle,
let the impatient ones go by.
