She was in town recently to give a stunning piano recital at the Vancouver Playhouse. Not the conservatory type From page 2G tespondence courses, and, just one month later, graduated from Indiana University with a Bachelor of Music degree. While her parents have always provided her with a great deal of emotional support, Cerovsek is proud that she hasn‘t had to rely on them for financial support. Apart from a Canada Council rant, she’s paid her entire way through university on the money she earns from recitals. With a master’s degree under her arm (which, by the way, she earned with a perfect 4.0 grade point average}, Cerovsek is now completing her PhD from Indiana University under the watchful eye of the Beaux Arts Trio’s Menahem Pressler, who she considers to be a “fantastic musician who makes you believe in yourself.”’ Her regime is rigorous: three to six hours of practising a day in ad- dition to classes, which leaves little time for performing. \ ERTAINMENT PUB Presents “Life is pretty normal right now,” she says, ‘‘A lot of people think it’s glamorous, but it’s not.” At this point Cerovsek isn’t sure where she’s going to finish her PhD. But one thing's for sure: it won't be at a music conservatory. “’m not fulliard-oriented. | don’t want to be in an incredibly competitive environment,”’ she says. But what is it like being the “under-achiever’’ of the family? (At age 14 Corey was one of the most sought-after violinists in the world and by age 18 had already “obtained his PhD in music and mathematics). As is characteristic of Katja Cerovsek, the response is both in- telligent and light-hearted. “It might have bothered me a bit when we were kids, but ! real- ized there’s no sense in competing — besides, we play different in- struments. Corey is so far ahead of everyone, anyway. He’s matured a lot in the last year, and now we're good friends.”’ COUPLES NIGHT!
