32 - Friday, November 30, 1990 - North Shore News AUTOMOTIVES ICBC explains premium changes LAST WEEK, we began a review of the changes made to B.C.’s auto insurance system for 1991 with a lock at premium changes. This week, an examination of the factors that lead to those changes. ICBC will need 4.5 per cent more in premium income next year including three per cent to cover ising claims (which will set a new record again this year), plus 1.5 per cent for the federal Goods and Services Tax. While motorists will not pay the GST on 1991 Autoplan premiums, as financial transactions of this nature are ex- empt, ICBC will pay this tax on some of the goods and services it purchases. A major benefit announced for 1991 is an increase in the weekly No-Fault Accident Benefits which help people injured in an accident recover some of their lost wages regardless of fault. Starting Jan. 1, that maximum will increase to $300 per week (up to 75 per cent of the gross wage prior to the accident) from the current $200 per week for all those eligible to receive these Ken Hardie INSURANCE CORPORATION OF BRITISH COLLIMBIA AUTOTOPIC benefits, including some who have been collecting them since ICBC’s earliest days in the mid-1970s. Bringing long-term recipients up to date involves taking their gross income at the time they were in- jured and calculating the equivalent income as of Jan. 1, 1991. They will then receive in- come replacement totalling 75 per cent of that gross amount to a maximum of $300 per week from ICBC. These payments will not be re- troactive io their date of injury, but will commence at the new level in January. ICBC will support B.C.’s ‘‘go green’’ campaign and help car poolers save money on their Autoplan premiums. ALL TIRES GREATLY REDUCED!! SNOW TIRES FROM As of Jan. 1, motorists who rate their vehicles for pleasure use only will be able to use them to commute to work up to six times per calendar month instead of the current four times. This means four people can share driving duties equally, covering — all works days, but keep their vehi- cles rated for pleasure use only in- stead of for to and from work. Four North Shore drivers with late model vehicles could save about $100 each on their annual Autoplan premiums and cut traf- fic congestion and lessen air pollution. In addition, most private pas- senger vehicles will be rated ac- cording to the territory in which they are ‘tgaraged,’' or kept when they’re not in use, rather than the area in which they are principally operated — a benefit for those who commute into the Lower Mainland. There are a few. other changes to Autoplan 1991, and your broker will have all the details. *89 PROBE LX Auto, air cond., tow kim. 89 COBRA GT V-8, 5 spd., 26,000 kIm. 1) T-BIRD | Lx 6 cyl. auto, pwr. 13,990 seats, air-cond 89 TOPAZ GS 4 dr., auto, air-cond.
