The centre has developed an en- try-level program called First Time to Fitness to provide an easy beginning for newcomers of any age or ability. The next program begins Oct. 3. Classes are 30 minutes long and run two times a week for four weeks. “One problem the fitness in- dustry has developed in the fast five years is a sophistication level that exceeds newcomers,’’ says Wendi Lacusta, physical fitness coordinator for the West Van- couver Parks and Recreation Department. ‘“‘Classes are either too hard and uncomfortable or too complicated for a novice to join.”’ The First Time to Fitness course reviews each exercise that will be encountered in aerobics classes and explains the purpose and tech- nique. Participants also learn what to do if they are not physically capable of performing an exercise or complicated move. Instructors Maureen Sherman and Lacusta teach first-timers how to gracefully opt out of an exercise in a way that will not be noticed by other class members, and illustrate how to modify exercises to a more manageable level of difficulty. The course introduces course members to gym and pool aerobics . f you" re 65 ce) over Zellers. will give you ~ classes and to different studio b: types and class styles.
