7 - Friday, August 25, 1989 - North Shore News Environmentalists: examine your own lifestyle first AN OPEN LETTER TO TERRY JACKS This letter is to you and the other 200 people who were out in their boats pouing oil on the troubled waters to protest against the pulp mills, It’s so easy to jump on the bandwagon for a good cause, gas up your power boat and harass the people who have no control but are trying to make a Siving just like you. I want to challenge each one of you to examine your lifestyle and your personal habits and tell me what you are doing at home and at your job to save our planet. In my home I waste nothing. All paper products are used until there is nothing left, and newspapers, bottles and cans are put out for recycle. i no longer buy any plastic wrap or tin foil. When I go to any store } take along a bag that I already hed at home, or ask clerks to not put my purchases in a bag. All food and gerden scraps go in the compost pile, eliminating the need for fertilizer. In my laundry jobs I use the same soapy water to wash cach load instead of letting hot soapy water run down the drain five or six times. As much as possible I use my bicycle for transportation. On garbage day we put out less than one can full. Now I challenge each one of you to write to me and tell me how you Stream pollution saddens resident Dear Editor: For five years our family delighted in looking for and nur- turing the fish in our backyard stream. An experience unique to the North Shore. On Sunday, June 25, however, we were witness to a very sad event. Our stream emitted a petrol odor in the afternoon and we later found over 40 minnows and larger trout dead. Ourselves and the children in the area were devastated to witness human thoughtlessness so close to home. We managed to save one trout; however, it was unlikely to survive. It was angering to watch its half- hearted attempts when it was mov- ed. I urge anyone who cares for our North Shore not to dump any foreign materials into storm drains, culverts, streams, etc. You can contact the Ministry of Environment at 1-584-8822 for in- formation on how to effectively dispose of toxic substances, and pat yourself on the back for trying to do something positive for the environment you live in. Especially for the children. .
