Although the district has only three percent of the province’s Grade Twelves, these students got 12 percent, or 119 of the provincial scholarships. They also earned 14 provincial district scholarships, which are designed to recognize excellence in non-academic subjects. Six special! provincial awards went to local students, including three winners of the Nancy Greene Scholarship for athletes of provin- cial or national status. The district hap-learned that at least five local students will receive Care Society elects directors THE RECENT annual general meeting of the North Shore Inter- mediate Care Society saw a number of officers and directors elected from the membership. Newly elected were: North Van- couver resident Gordon Crozier, president; North Vancouver resi- dent Don Preston, vice-president; North Vancouver resident Jack McMiilan, treasurer; West Van- couver resident Dolly Cartwright, director; North Vancouver resident Rev. Earl Lewis, director; West Vancouver resident Harry Weatherley, director. Directors continuing pre-election terms are Don Chamberlain, Robert Findlay, Doris McManus, Howard Maundrell of North Van- couver; North Vancouver resident James Irvine, past president and director; George L. U. of Victoria honors locals OUTSTANDING STUDENTS, including those from the North” Shore, and the donors who con- tributed to their educations were honored by the University of Vic- toria recently. During UVic’s 21st’ annual Awards. Recognition Ceremony approximately 850 students were recognized for their academic achievements during the past year. The following students from the North Shore received awards of $250 or more. Krista Bentley, Arts and Sciences 1, received the William and Catherine Keene Memorial Scholarship of $1,500. Cobi Bothma, Arts and Sciences 1,, Bachelor of Science, received the President’s Entrance Scholar- ship (The Clifford J. Rogers Me- morial! Scholarship) of $2,000. Jonathan Ratel, Law 2, Bachelor of Laws, received the Davis and Company Summer Scholarship of $2,019. Norleen Scott, Fine Arts 3, Bachelor of Music, received the Rebecca and Esther Lazarus S.‘ slarship in Music (Piano) of $275; the Frank and Margaret Gibbs Scholarship of $300; the University of Victoria Faculty Scholarship of $500; the Presi- dent’s Scholarship of $1,425. Brent Stickland, Law 2, Bachelor of Laws, received the Farris, Vaughan, Wills and Mur- phy Summer Employment Schol- arship of $2,019. Louise Woznow, Arts and Sciences 1, Bacheler of Arts, received the 7T.S. McPherson Scholarship Renewal of $2,500. the relatively new Canadian Science Scholarships which will provide $2,000 a year for four years of post-secondary study. Thirty-four post secondary en- trance scholarships and 205 local scholarships (given by business, service and community groups) were awarded to district graduates. Handsworth Secondary Prin- cipal Ken Feyer and Sutherland Secondary Principal Lorne Schemmer, spoke to the school voard of District No. 44, Tuesday, about the success of local students in winning scholarships and the support and encouragement pro- vided by teachers and counsellors.
