16 - Sunday, November 29, 1987 - North Shore News Mechanical failure possible cause in NORTH VANCOUVER RCMP have not ruled out mechanical failure as a cause of a Nov. 17 motor vehicle mishap, pictured on the front page of the Nov. 18 edi- tion of the News, in which a 1984 Chevette driven by local resident Jo Ann Andrews crashed through the front window of the Capilano Rock and Gem Shop on Bridgman Avenue in North Vancouver. Museum quality mineral specimens and gemstome carvings were destroyed in the accident. The store had been just renovated prior to the mishap. Damage in the shop is estimated at approximately $20,000. The car is a write-off. Andrews was not in- jured in the accident. The wild, horrific ride began for Andrews as soon as she started the car. “T had the car parked at the Muffin Break. When I started the car up and put it into drive, it zoomed backwards. 1 put my foot on the brake and it shot forward. The keys were locked into the igni- “tion and the car wouldn’t slow down,’’ Andrews said.
