for example, the earwig is mainly
an outdoor insect without any real
need to be indoors,’’ says Dr.
Roger Groathaus, an entomology
researcher, ‘‘They tend to wander
into the home rather than inten-
tionally seek refuge there.”’

Contrary to the superstition
which lends itself to the name
‘earwig’, this insect does not crawl
into human ears and nest in the
brain! As a nocturnal, crawling in-
sect, the earwig hides in cracks,
hollow stalks, tubular lawn fur-
niture and door frames, during the
day.

Since the earwig’s life span is
about one year, they bore
themselves inte the earth for the
winter, able to withstand
temperatures of up to -30°C, to
begin reproduction in the spring.

In early spring, the female ear-
wig lays approximately 60 white,
oval eggs under rocks and in crev-
ices. Unlike most insects, the
mother tends the young for about
two weeks.

The young become adults in 70
days from hatching. A second
batch is often produced in June of
the same year. The earwig popula-
tion peaks in mid-August.

As with all insects, precautions
must be taken to keep earwigs out
of the home and garden before
they become a threat to our well-
being.

Since earwigs originate in the
grass and garden and then make
their. way to the house, precau-
tionary steps can be taken.

As the spring season matures,
pesticides should be used around
the exterior of the house to treat
areas where earwigs may enter.
