SEIRERIe ord Mae eat ES Collins needs a Dear Editor: The publication of Doug Col- lins’ article on Feb. 15 indicates one of two things: either the North Shore News has resolved to en- courage — even pay for — the principles of racism and bigotry, or the Editor-In-Chief was on holidays that day, and the article sought its way into print without first undergoing editorial scrutiny. Whatever the case may be, there are a few comments | would tike to make. The controversies surrounding Canadian immigration laws, par- ticularly the refugee regulations, demand special attention. In a country where a frail dollar, lack of tertiary industry, and high unemployment figures dominate the economic landscape, the influx of people who cannot readily con- tribute to the economy only inten- sifies an already growing problem. While Mr. Collins’ solution to the immigration problem may be speedy, mass murder, or ‘‘a couple of well-placed shots’’ in the huil of “that Tamil boat’’ is hardly my idea of either expedience or humor. Furthermore, Collins’ racial remarks (‘‘bulbous-eyed bug- hunters’’) and. juvenile diction (‘‘bubble-headed blowhards’’) are merely a glaring reflection of a burnt-out columnist who has abso- lutely nothing left to say. The concerns of this issue are simply not based on some vague notion of cultural takeover. Doug Collins’ bigotry is piainly another example of the many barriers that greatly inhibit the possibility for a reasonable solution. At the heart of his arguments there lies the widespread sentiment that the Canadian doors must be shut to refugees. But how does Collins expect to gain important public support when his arguments consist of nothing but a’ hodgepodge of unwieldy phraseol- ogy and name-calling designed not to compel — but repel — his teaders? Perhaps it is Collins, at North Shore News, who needs the holt C. Hodgson day. West Vancouver DRAPERIES BY S.
