Ronald: Cardinal and Keith Pelkey, accused of carrying out the robbery, will see a‘date for their trial on the charges set sometime next week... Four witnesses appeared for the Crown at Thursday’s heaving, describing the rob- bery and the actions of two men in assisting police in making arrests near the Bank of Commerce at First and Lonsdale. Acccording to David Reid, one of the two, he stood in line with a man he identified as Cardinal and chatted with him for 10 minutes just be- fore the robbery. “He seemed like a really nice guy — 1! was kind of shocked,’ Reid said after testifying he overheard the man warn the teller he was armed and then demand money. Reid said he followed Cardinal from the bank, across Lonsdale and into a nearby alley. “I was scared I could be seas ae au ‘Pelkey, identified as knowing what he looked like, so I kept my distance,’’ Reid said. Reid watching from 50 feet away as the man in the alley switched jackets witha second man, identified as and turned the money over to him. When they separated, Reid trailed Pelkey, and wrestled him to the ground. When the man was pinned to the sidewalk, Reid yelled to passer-by Leonard Beck to grab the other man. Beck testified he walked up to the man and asked him to return to the scene. The man ignored the request’ and walked into a nearby hotel where the arrest was made. Evidence submitted by prosecutor Wallace included a gun, jackets, money re- covered at the time of the arrest and a record of mark- ed bills that are said to have been included in the almost $2,000 given the robber. ' Project As well as testimony by Reid and Beck, the court heard from RCMP members and two bank teilers. Defense lawyers Tony Allen and Dimitri Kontou questioned witnesses on their identification of Cardinal and Pelkey but called tio witnesses of their own. ‘The purpose of the pre- liminary hearing is to deter- mine if there is enough evidence to send a case to a full trial. City to join trash fight? THE DISTRICT of North .Vancouver, already facing criticism over its decision to close the Premier Street landfill by the end of this year, may find trouble from a neighbor over the issue Monday. A motion going to North Vancouver City council Monday night, if approved, would see the City come out against the planned closure and Mayor Jack Loucks directed to inform = the Greater Vancouver Sewerage and Drainage District of the lack of support. The motion is similar to those approved by Van- couver and Delta councils, who are basing their opposi- tion to the closure on the fact that North Shore gar- bage would then have to be hauled to the Burns Bog landfill in Delta. Opposition is also bused on the draft plan of the Lower Mainland Refuse which recommends the Premier Street site be left open until at least October . ° of 1986. .
