A8 - Friday, October 5, 1984 - North Shore News ‘ In Hunky Bill they persecuted a time bomb AY IT PLEASE my lord justice, in our Wednesday session we were discussing the charges laid against me by a group calling itself the North Shore Coalition For Fair Media. As already explained, The Coaliton has called for a boycott on Collins and The News on account of how | am a louse. I explained, too, that the Coalition is Protean- shaped, having appeared pre- viously as the Aboriginal Support Committee, etc., and that it is now using a B.C. Human Rights Coal:- tion letterhead. The charges are that I am abusive, sexist, racist, and malicious, that ! use bad words, and am inaccurate. This being a kangaroo, court, | have pleaded guilty on all counts except the last. But the court will have to.ad- mit that on Wednesday | made mincemeat of my dim- witted opponents. It is w omy delight to discuss§ their charge of inaccuracy with regard to the Hunky Bill case. Their claim is that in my column of May 13, I wrote ‘‘without doing the necessary research’’. And, the human righters having been embar- rassed by the Hunky Bill fiasco, they attempted to lay the blame on Jack Heinrich. Their letter stated: ‘“Fims_ case wag not in- inated by the Human Rights Branch or human rights acti- vists. 1t was directed to the Human Rights Branch from the top, that 1s, by the then Minister of Labor, Jack Heinrich My column of May 13 was an attack on the four federal ministers (now consigned to the poliucal dust-heap, thank God) who tried to interfere with Bill Bennett's sensible move against human rights loontes What! the said about ministers and Hunky Bill was this: ‘‘These depressing ignora- muses deplore the new B.C. legislation and demand that it be dumped. They howl that the present human _ rights code (the one under which it was possible to persecute Hunky Bill and others) plac- ed B.C. in the forefront of progressive thinking. Crazy, eh?’’ get this y Doug Collins aera: This affair was the one in which a man was put through the human rights ringer for calling his restaurant chain Hunky Bill's) House. of Perogies | was the first to blow the whistle on it 7 also attended the public inquiry The case was initiated, my lord, by the C anadian Ukras man Business and Protes sonal Association It was not “directed trom the top The i mailbox <| association may or may nol have addressed their com- jplaint to Heinrich. If they did, it would routinely have en: handed to the Human Rights Branch for scrutiny. The branch eventually pur- sued the case with gusto, and recommended the inquiry. Nola Landucc: was branch director when the matter first came up, but had gone long before public proceedings started. At the hearings, she testified she would not have recommended an_ inquiry. That was done by her suc- cessor, Hanne Jensen, who was later dumped and show- ed how politically impartial she was by beating her gums at Solidarity rallies. It is important to under- stand, my lord, that the Hunky Bill affair blew up in the faces of the human rights fanatics like a bomb. It brought rich ridicule upon them. They lost the case, and have never recovered from it. , In an attempt to. save something from the wreck, Jensen tried to foist responsi- bility onto Heinrich. It is flue. of course, that he had to ‘Sarction the inquiry, and he Should have had more brains. But it ts-tudicrous to imply, as the so-called Coalition For A Slanted Media does, that he was out looking’ for Hunky Bills to harass. He was the meat in the sandwich. As mentioned on Wednes- day, a key component in the Kill Collins Movement is the North Shore Women’s Cen- tre, which is very brig in the boycott business. Last year, for instance, they were boy- cotting Eaton's, the Royal Bank of Canada, and Pay TV Hilarious though if may be, the Coalition now has people going through ali my columns looking for sin They promise turther bulletins Allow me to for the publicity, thank them my lord Miandarins unlikely to reduce spending Doct biter Prisnsce Nfiriister Mulroney recently aginouneed a bask forve to streamline poyern Mcht prowh arenes anna tepulatrons viidet Ddegeaty Pcene Mitister brik Noieisen Most oof (the task forces spadcwork will bq ertie however bey vival NOb viet tratidharias Pros the treasuey Board Seoretartat Cote treipetat bee feat green f Phavitip reser atrcrtis aber ft bas Prrcespree ts Poot stecess oh oat foorte bey rhea tide cn: Stree tata litae fre oM Tr attre s vere reprsbatrotis aebrisiisteatesd !
