January 11, 1984 Sports Desk 985-2131 BLUES BASKETBALL Men, women win CAP COLLEGE Blues men’s and women’s basket- ball teams each emerged as victors in Canada’s largest coHege basketball tournament in a barn- burning final. “The Blues Invitational basketball tournament held at B.C.1I.T., Burnaby, last week, attracted teams from as far afield as Portland and Calgary and provided top notch play and _ entertain- ment. : To reach the finals against Mount Royal, Calgary, the Blues women downed Medicine Hat 68-53 and U. of Victoria 65-29. Blues jumped into an early 10-2 lead, but by the half Mount Royal had closed the score 34-29, five points behind the Blues. A regrouped Mount Royal team then pulled away by 10 to take a 51-41! lead. What prov- ed to be an exciting and well played finish resulted in the Cap women squeaking past the visitors 65-63. Top scorers for Capilano were: Brenda Giesbrecht 14; BLUES. FORWARD Sean Campbell stretches for the basket in the se- cond half of a closely contested 73-72 final against Vancouver Com- munity College. Cap men’s and women’s Blues both won their finals in Canada’s largest invita- tional college tournament held at B.C.LT., Bur- naby, recently. The women squeaked by Mount Royal College, Calgary, by a score of 65-63 in their final. Tricia MacDonald 13, and Leah Ellis 10. The men won their berth in the decider against Van- couver Community College by eliminating Medicine Hat in their opener 82-71, and UBC 74-64. In what looked like a repeat performance of the women’s finals, played earlier in the day, Cap men took an early 30-20 lead with Vancouver C.C. closing the gap to 30-24 by halftime. Blues led throughout most of the second half until sudden- ly Vancouver burst into a scoring spree, ‘evening the score at 44 apiece. During a see-saw battle Vancouver went ahead 58-54 at one point, and with 34 seconds left to play, the score was tied up 70-70. Vancouver missed at the foul line with less than 30 seconds on the clock. The single foul shot was successful to give the Blues a 73-70 edge. Van- couver was able to score in the remaining few seconds, but/to no avail as the Blues let the clock run out to capture the victory 73-72. Top Blues scorers were: Mark Marter 24 and Dave Sidhu 23. The victories for the Blues will have a strong influence on national ranking among the 150 eligible Canadian col- leges and should place the Blues within the top 10.
