But if the trustees thought the proposal was a good onc, the teachers had many reservations. “The students and parents will feel devastated because they will find their class- rooms gone.” said West Van Teachers’ Assocation president Heather Walker. “Some positive things may eome out of the con- solidation ... but my greatest concern is in the movement of grade sevens to the senior secondary,” Walker said. While teacher = after teacher critized the proposals, at teast one “taxpayer” was excited about the recommendations. Paul Sykes said the board and administration should be “commended” for its groundwork. Another group of parents from Glenmore was upset that its had not been told to put its $6,000 adventure playground on hold. They had just completed it last week. “IT believe it was poor faith on your (Carlin’s) part that when | phoned you a year ago asking if there were plans to close Glenmore, your answer was. wishy washy,” said Glenmore parent Brook Campbell. Carlin's response was “if I boobed, then I boo boobed.” The projected savings on the schoo! closure could be as high as $500,000 a year, but if the board can rent out the facilities that projection could be higher. “If you don't do anything, the demands of the system will not be fulfilled,” warned Carhn. “I really believe it’s going to be a long tome before education will be a pronty with the tax dollar.” Alban said the %$500,000 will “po along way to solving” the board's financial problem. Stil, one problem has the board worried and that is the effect of school closures on the surrounding property values. “That ts a real problem, a real concern of ours, but on the other hand reality is reahty,” Carlin said. The superintendent said the board would try and keep the schools open by renting them to day care centres and by making arrangements with the municipality, but if they could not rent or lease the buildings, they would be closed. “It ts the best way for it to go and will put us far ahead of any other distnct in the province,” said Carlin. “Brave words, Mr. Carlin,” teacher Paddy Boyle responded.
