backyard sailboat building is
just a retirement hobby. But
this hobby has already pro-
duced nine boats and a tenth
is ON its Way.

And his boats are no mere
weekend projects. The last
was a 38-footer and the latest
is a more modest 30-foot
motor sailboat.

Ernksen was before West
Vancouver council to con-
vince the alderman that buat
building is just a non-profit
hobby.

Council had considered
his application on December
1 and it had been recom-
mended that tt be rejected,
but council delayed voting
unul Enmksen could be pre-
sent.

Backyard boat builder
decides 10 is enough

A staff memo to council
said Eriksen had ‘abused’ the
backyard boat building
pnvilege which “is thought
to be a once or twice in a
lifetime experience.”

“It appears to be the
fourth boat you've built in
not too many years,” Alder-
man Dave Finlay pointed
out.

“Not four - I've built nine
boats,” Erickson protested,
undaunted.

Finlay pursued the case:
“Are you selling the boats?”
he asked.

The elderly boat builder
called on his wife - a gentle,
white-haired lady - = for
assistance.
