OLI off to promising start Learning Institute popular B.C.’s Open Learning Instituee (OLE) has ended its first academic year with = greater success than had been anticipated. Enrollment in the = in- stitute, started two years ago to cater to the educational needs of people with dif- ficulty gaining access to regular classroom = in- struction, is far greater than expected. In September 1979 initial enrolment was about 700. By January of this) year, the figure was up to 2450. More surprising. enrolment for the current summer semester is 1500, far more than OLI expected. The institute is confident of doubling the number of students in the next three semesters. OLI was given a mandate in 1978 to provide educational services for the “geographically and socially isolated.” . The geographically isolated are those not within easy range of college facilites. Though every sizable B.C community now has some form of college. there are still thousands of people who can't casily get to these institutes. Socially isolated people scem to have access to these facilities, but really don't because of yobs, health problems. small children. or because they feel un- comfortable in a college or university social setting. OLI directors feel they have reached both of these groups of people with their programs. Research indicates that interest in OLI is related to distance from post- secondary institutes. Over Seventy percent of OLI Students are from metropolitan areas. The average OLI student, it seems, is a small town resident. femalc, in her mid- 30's, employed or a housewife and with some high school education OLI offers three program arcas Adult Basic Education, University non- studies, and Career, Technical and Vocational programs. The institute feels that the large enrolment and the makeup of the student body validates the founding of OLI. There is a demand for home study programs, especially in small com- munities, the institute believes. OLI gives access to comprehensive educational services in places which can't be served by classroom Instructors and.to pcople unable to attend regularly scheduled courses. The Open Learning Iin- sututc, its directors feel, has been and will continue to be a succcss. VERY -cescescseene, Special Purchase Wigs several styles | $ 1 O95 limited colours .
