Unfortunately the points that I want-to comment on were already. known to me and so they:come as no surprise but _ it is somewhat surprising, if one is to believe Mr. Moya, that so many Canadians are apparently uninformed. The: dilemma which Mr. Moya outlines is, to me at ‘privacy, fundamental. rights of stopped unfair publicity of their (the suspects) pictures in the “News” before their day in court. To be judged by a 1 public ignorant of the facts is - least, typical of so many apsects of Canadian life in- that it involves ‘areas where there is no legal obligation on a citizen to comply but ‘practise has established that unless: you comply you are going to cause yourself a lot of tre trouble. oo \ It is this very attitude that I have deplored for a long time and which, in my own little way, I have tried for many years to fight and will continue to fight in the time ‘that I remain here: The whole point of the letter however is to ask, and hopefully to prod some ‘Canadians into asking, when is this situation going to be Concerned Citizens have no PR budget . Dear Editor: It appears that the chairman of the North Vancouver School Board does not appreciate the drop sheet. from Concerned Citizens Association. This factual sheet explained why our school taxes are going down. One can only speculate as to how the school board . would have presented this information. This “glossy and ex- pensive” drop sheet was paid for by individuals and ‘parents. who feel our schools must be improved. Unlike the school board, Concerned Citizens Association does not have a public relations budget in excess of $37,000. Dr. and Mrs. W. Bell North Vancouver “BUYER PROTECTION PLAN!! The kind of situation Iam speaking about is very well described by Mr. Moya in following passages: _ “Also, unless you have been arrested, you are not required to give your name to the police, produce identification or explain what you are doing. (Mr. Moya points out the exception is the ‘driver of a motor vehicle.) . “However, the best policy is to cooperate with the police. Dear Editor: Thank you to all the people who gave so much of their time and energy, to make this year’s West Vancouver Community Day such as success. I would particularly like to thank the committee Mr. John the better spent photographing . automobiles and rush hour traffic and leave law. en- forcement to the police. In doing this he might leave the front page of your fine newspaper for some hard news and-save your readers “Slow transformation toa police state? “In practice, you will be arrested if you don’t give . minimum cooperation to the police.” The question I ask, and which I wish every Canadian ‘ would ask, of himself and of those he appoints to for- mulate laws on his behalf and to run the country on his behalf, is why if the law does not require one to identify oneself .should one be arrested for not identifying oneself? If this practice does _not bear the hallmark of a police state, at least in its incipient stages, then I don’t know what does. Community Day thanks Peirson, Mr. Tony Petersen, Mrs. Linda Hampson, Mrs. Roberta) Hemmings, Mr. Graham Chambers, Mr. Rusty Pierce and Mr. Frank’ Kurucz. As well, sincere thanks goes to everyone who participated or came to from enduring another of Mr. Ian Smith's publicity stunts. ; Sly Lyle Paterson, B.C. When are the Canadian people going to wake up and . realize exactly the extent to which their basic freedom is being encroached upon, and when are they going to stand up and fight this en- croachment as so many brave Canadians stood some 35 years ago against the armies of a nation which allowed itself, just as Canada is now-allowing itself, to be slowly but very surely transformed into a police state? _ J.B.P.
