Some of fiese changes have affected the orth Shore News, and the changes have been very pleasant. the show. Our standing joke at the News, whenever anyone asks us how we felt about the strike at 2250. Granville Street, is that we thought ed died and gone to heaven! We were doing just fine before the dailies went on strike, though. The North Shore News is now ten years . old. It has been a long and ° ” difficult struggle to build this . mewspaper. We've fought for advertisers against many other publications, some of which are no longer in business and some of which, like__Pacific _ Press,—_were-—- merely taking a nap. Before 1977 it was forever touch- and-go; lately (pre-strike) there’s been a little more go and a little less touch. So I and a lot of other people in the Lower Mainland have been living in more or less _ blissful ignorance of world affairs. Yes, it is good to have our daily newspaper back gain. SHORTAGE LOOMING. Local publishers were advised back in November that they were on ‘allocation’, a mysterious term, and that they should be advised that Pacific Press was continuing to purchase Now the pulp and ,paper workers are close to a strike. I sure hope they don’t do it, for with Pacific Press holding their newsprint reserves and_ tocal publications so far unable to purchase an adequate in- ventory in the event of a - prolonged strike the future of this and other B.C. papers lies in some doubt, at least for the next little while. 1 hope that subsequent events will prove this column to be unnecessarily gloomy as far as newsprint shortages go. Although I must admit that we did very well during the strike, I also have to admit that the spectre of the unions publishing their own paper while Pacific Press sat on their own hands, unable to use the same tools, didn’t feel very good to me.
