And no segment of the population is free from the problem, according to- the chairman of the board at North Vancouver's hesterfield House. “The message we want to pet across is that anyone can abuse their child. We offer support and counselling,” Jean Lawrence says of the house at 819 Chesterfield. “Our main goal here is to treat_ and = prevent child abuse.” Lawrence defines abuse as encompassing physical, emotional and sexual abuse as well as abuse through neglect. child She says the only common factor among abusive parents is that very often they were abused themselves as children. There are many _ cases where two or more children in a family are treated well and only one will be abused. Lawrence speculates this - may be because they are the “wrong” sex or may be hyperactive, or “different.” Chairman of the Board Jean Lawrence > Staff have found the highest percentage of child abusers are pre-school mothers who spend a. great deal of time with. their children. But there. appears to be no_ socio-economic group which is more prone to abusing their children, Lawrence says. There are now four groups _ of women who meet at the house -with.a social worker on a regular basis. Admitting that they. may be capable of abusing their children is a “very sefious thing to do and they deserve. a lot of credit,” Lawrence ‘says. Monica Belliveau, who gives the course, says “some. of the women who attend the groups expect their two year olds to be able to do things ‘which they can't really do until they re four,” taught how much to expect and at what age. They are also shown how to “discipline without being ' punitive,” Belliveau says.
