Each Wednesday leading up to
Canada Summer Games, the
North Shore News sports section
is profiling local athletes who will
be members of Team B.C. at the
Aug. 8-21 Canada Summer Games
in Kamloops.

WHEN TEAM B.C. takes to the
track in Kamloops next month,
one of the runners to watch will
be North Vancouver’s Lori Dur-
ward,

Durward was ranked fifth in the
World Junior rankings this year
and she finished first in the
1500-metre race at the Pan Am
Juniors. — -

The former Handsworth Sec-
ondary student was named the
Marilyn Pomfret UBC. Women’s
Athlete of the Year.

Durward, .20, is studying’ nutri-
tional sciences at UBC and plans
on graduating in 1995.

When she’s not training, com-

peting, going to school, or work-
ing at her part-time job, she’s
volunteering her time to help ter-
minally ill children.

Her goal is to perform to her
highest potential.

Runners

THIS SATURDAY, July 10 at
6 am., 125. runners from
across North America will hit
the start line in Canada’s larg-
est ultra trail run. The runners
will cover 30 miles (48.6 km) of
the Baden-Powell trail across
the North Shore mountains,
with a vertical change of
16,000 feet (4,900 m).

Last year’s winners, Peter
Findley of Kamloops and Mar-
cia Winger of Sardis, will
challenge an international field
including Fiona Cole, one of
Britain’s top female trail run-
ners, and Gary Wright of Seat-
tle, who completed ten 100-
mile trail runs last year. All
members of the community are
invited to watch the event (no
charge).
