Skeet Ciub a N. Van tradition since 1912 THE NORTH Shore Skeet Club ts a bit more than a handful of good ‘ol boys out making a bit of noise in the forest. The club, one of the oldest trap and skeet clubs in the pro- vince, stretches back to connect with the earliest community roots in North Vancouver. The 120-member club, located in the Lower Seymour watershed area, is currently under fire to make way for the new Seymour Demonstration Forest opening in August. The club has been located on Lillooet Road in the watershed since 1957, Before that, the club shot out at Blair Rifle Range, the old ar- my rifle range in Dollarton. But the club began around $912 as the North Shore Gun Club, with members shooting clay pigeons and wildlife near the mouth of MacKay Creek. North Vancouver resident Don Egginton, who learned to shoot (One block east of Ca By MICHAEL BEC News Reporter with his family ever since he was big enough to squeeze a trigger, has been shooting with the club for the past 30 years, Club facilities include a clubhouse, four traps and a diesel power generatur situated on ap- proximately one acre of land. Members pay $25 annually to let loose some lead with 12-gauge to 410-gauge shotguns Tuesday nights, 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. from March to October. Rumor has it that famed pistol-packer Roy Rodgers drop- ped by for some fancy trick shooting at the club in earlier days. “When you talk about guns these days, people get upset, but for me its a relaxing sport,”’ said Egginton, a@ past vice-president of the skeet cla, He fondly remembers the days when the district was a_litile wilder and the population a bit more sparse, and open hunting was allowed in the area. “My dad and | used to go hunting on the flats on the east side of the Second Narrows Bridge during the ‘40s for ducks and pheasants. There was deer hunting around Deep Cove, too,"' he said. Today he shoots the clay targets made locaily by Caldwell Industries in North Vancouver and looks forward cach year to the annual Boxing Day shoot. Said Egginton, ‘I have a very personal feeling on this. When you're born here, have had guns all your life, you really hate to see this go. Once it's gone, that’s it. It’s heritage, a part of North Vancouver.” * custoin foam packing * crates for art & industry ° packing boxes ¢ shipping, tana, sea, air * post office parcel drop Leave your parcel packing to FLASH PACK.
