Harkemma comes out of the darkroom VANCOUVER director Reg Harkema knew he was onto a good thing as secon as he started filming A Girl Is A Girl, Harkema was having a conversation with Christine Haebler, his executive producer, about the Toronto Film Festival, which already had hundreds of sub- missions. Harkema had barely started shooting. “I turned to her and held my hand in the air, very steady, like | was a sur- geon or something and said ‘Sce how nervous i: am?’” A Girl isa Girl made the cut. The editor of such films as Hard Core Lago and Last Night gained his confidence, and invaluable experience, from directors such as Guy Maddin, Bruce McDonald and Don McKellar.
