16 - Wednesday, November 2, 1988 — Capilano Chronicle Construction over at St. CONSTRUCTION AT St. Mar- tin’s Anglican Church has come to a close following four and a half months of renovations, and everyone is invited to celebrate at the upcoming parish market. The basement of the historic church, located at 3166 St. George’s Ave., had been gutted to made way for a new lower floor that now includes space for the Sunday School, nursery, sacristy, choir, vestry and church office. Archbishop Douglas Hambidge was present at last month’s re- opening service and Thanksgiving Dinner. After having met for church in the parish hall all sum- mer, services were once again held in the church proper during Oc- Martin’s tober. North Shore residents will have the opportunity to sce the com- pleted renovations at the church's annual parish market on Nov. 19. The market, which offers refreshments throughout the sale, runs from | to 4 p.m. and is timed to complement the afternoon Candy Cane Fair and lunch at North Lonsdale United Church. The following day, Sunday, Nov. 20, the parish will officially open the completed facility, in- cluding the space already in use by the. Montessori preschool. The Vancouver Foundation assisted the parish in making the space available to the preschool. — DELBROOK RESIDENT Lawyer offers advice FOR THE past year, Delbrook resident Dugald Christie has been providing free legal advice in the weekly clinic he started at West Vancouver Baptist Church. Christie, a lawyer with his own general practice downtown, said he first started the clinic for members of his church, but later decided to open it up to others when ‘(the church) wanted to reach out into the community.” DUGALD E. CHRISTIE “1 find it very rewarding,’’ says Christie, who sees people by ap- pointment every Thursday from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. ‘*l would love to expand this kind of thing.’’ Christie said he would like to see more lawyers offering their ser- vices through churches and com- ‘munity centres, where they could be of benefit to the community and ‘‘enjoy giving legal advice.’’ Christie mainly counsels on matrimonial cases and civil con- cerns, some of which he says are “quite exotic.’’ One case he suc- cessfully mediated involved a fami- ly who had given their dog to another couple, but wanted to en- sure that their children would still have visiting rights to the pet. ‘‘To them it was very important,”’ said Christie. “One wants diplomacy to reign,’’ stated Christie. In mediating a dispute, he says he tries to avoid seeing the parties go- ing to trial. Another of his goals is to help people become more con- fident in filling out their own court documents, ‘‘! advise them, So it’s aself-help kind of thing." Although the service is aimed primarily at people who could not otherwise afford to see a lawyer, Christie. says there are no restric- tions, and that the clinic is also visited by people who are not low income. In this case, Christie says he encourages his clients to con- tribute to a charity of their choice in exchange for his advice. Christie volunteers his time for the clinic, and sets up appoint- ments through the church office, where he holds the clinic Thursday evenings. He emphasizes, however, that ‘‘church matters don’t come into it.”” The clinic has proven very popu- lar, especially during the winter months, and Christie usually ad- vises five or six parties each Thursday evening. People interested in making an appointment are asked 1o call the church office at 922-0911.
