System might have averted spill A PRECISION navigation system manufactured by a North Van- couver company could kave kelped avert the recent oil spill disaster in Valdez, Alaska, according to the company president. Helmut Lanziner of Offshore Systems Ltd. said the system, which digitalizes information from hydrographic charts and defence maps to provide precise on-screen navigation for Coast Guard vessels and tankers, ‘‘would have made it almost impossible (for the Exxon Valdez tanker crew) to have screwed up.’’ Offshore was recently awarded a $399,957 federal government contract to make its precision integrated navigation systems for the Canadian Armed Forces, and bas sold similar systems to the Ca- nadian and U.S navies and Chevron Shipping in the United States for olf tankers delivering in the Gulf of Mexico. The systems in the most recent contract will give two auxiliary mine counter-measures vehicles the ability to operate precisely in confined waterways. Offshore, which developed its system for use in the Beaufort Sea oil fields, bas been in North Vancouver since 1977 and employs about 25 people. Lanziner said the company wrote to Exxon about its system after the 300-metre Exxon Valdez ran aground early Good Friday near Valdez, Alaska, and spilled an estimated 38 million litres of crude oi! into west coast Alaska waters.
