Drive with care
in school zones

AFTER a long sum-
mer, ICBC is remind-
ing drivers that with
school back in session
this month extra care
and attention are need-
ed in school and play-
ground areas.

During the first days of

school, children can be excit-
ed or preeceupied and can
forget about safety rules.

Motoris:s need to be aware of

this and be prepared for the
unexpected.

The 30 km/h speed Emit
in school zones is in effect
from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on
days when students are in
class.

ICBC is reminding drivers
-to slow down and to watch
for students being dropped
_ off or picked up in school

“- zones.

Drivers must aiso stop for

school buses when their lights
are flashing.

On streets next to public
playgrounds, the speed linnit is
30 km berveen dawn and
dusk.

According to 1997 police
reports, cight pedestrians
aged 19 and under were killed
and 631 injured in traffic col-
lisions in B.C.

Police issued more than
19,000 speed violation tickets
in school zones last year.
Another 6,300 tickets were
issued in playground zones.

Last December, | fines
increased in school, play-
ground = and construction
zones.

The ticketed amount for
speeding onc to 20 km/h
over the fimit in such zones is
now §173 and for 21 ta 40
km/h over the limit, the fine
15 $230.

Remember, the kids are
there so drive with care.
