Awareness week, Maureen Rae-Chute of the
North Shore recycling program talked at Park
and Tilford Gardens about the benefits of a
worm compost for condos and apartments.

wood now will reduce
harmful air pollution

later, says the B.C.
Lung Association.

Drying wood for at least
five months helps it burn
cleaner, putting fewer chemi-
cals, organic gases, dust and
soot particles into the air.

These contaminants can
cause headaches, dizziness
and breathing difficulties for
people with respiratury prob-
lems such as asthma, chronic
bronchitis and emphysema.

“We recognize that heat-
ing with electricity or natural
gas is not always an option for
some British Columbians.
They should cut and dry fire-
wood carly in the year,” says
Richie Gage, B.C. Lung
Association volunteer presi-
dent.

Tips to reduce the pollur-
ing effects of wood burning:
BB Use wood which is split to
a maximum thickness of 10-
15 cm;

8 Never burn wet or green
wood, painted wood, railroad
ties, or particle board.
