It appalls sme that the North
Vv: ancouver City: Council is getting
ant! pay increase.

What really irks me. however, is
that the inajority of council see
nothing wrong with it

Councillor Barbara Perrault, for
one, has defended the increase as
pretty modest. | 4

“The raise,” she says. "Works
out to fess than four cents per chy
taxpayer.” :

Other sentiments include “It is
not out of fine with what other
councils are © receiving’. and
“Council! members. have a heavy
work load and should be reimbursed
accordingly.” 1

IT couldn't care less about what
other councillors are receiving.

What we are talking about here
is a question of right'and wrong and
not one of keeping, up with the
Joneses. ;

Is it really that difficult for coun-
cillors to see that?

No. matter how, councillors
attempt to portray the issue, it is far

from being a complex isstte. There's
no need to come up with complex
formulas, or to waste council's dime
discussing the issue.

From this day forth, council pay
raises should automatically be tied
to what they are prepared to pay
their own employees. What could be
fairer or simpler?

thinking that they are any more spe-
cial than the rest of us? Especially
when we are the ones who are foot-

‘ing the bill.

“Granted, it may truly only be
four cents per taxpayer, But that is
not the point. °

It really is a question of principle
and doing what is right. Can't coun-
cil see this, or do they simply not
care?

Neither bodes well for good gov-
ernment. It’s lithe wander that the
vast majority of us are disillusioned
with politicians in general.
