Following the redevelopment of the 1100 block, which still has vacancies in expectation of remodelling, news of exten- sive renovations to the 1000 block of Robson Street has hit retailers in the area. . Owners of a major portion of the block, Hartley Wood Holdings Inc., will be tearing down the south side intersect- ing Thurlow and Robson streets to build a multi-level retail complex..The Vancouver company, owned by a foreign inter- est, wil! begin construction on Oct. | with a scheduled com- pletion date of July 1996. The multi-million-dollar project’ s design incorporates a combined three level and two level compiex. Retailers in that area are now searching for temporary space while construction is under way and are finding little available. Some tenants will not return to the higher rent complex. The effected stores include Chachkas, Boy’s Co., Plum Clothing, Aritzia, Rocks and Gems Canada, Galioway’s, “Snowilake, Bagel Street Cafe and Brussels Chocoiates. -A new boutique called XCVIIE (98) at 104-1100 Robson ’ St. showcases fashion forward, finely made ladies’ wear by. - Hong Kong designer Peter Lau: The shop is the third of its kind with two stores located in Hong Kong. The unusual designs incorporate novelty fabrics in youth- ful, figure-flaunting designs currently sized for petite fig- ures. Sizes will be expanded for the Canadian market in the near future. The store's best bets are knits and dresses. Aritzia Doe Marten stores, owned by the Aritzia Clothing chain, recently closed all but one location. Over the past year, the shoe stores experienced a decrease in sales in what was the store’s top-selling label. When the store at 1208 Robson was closed for temporary block construc- tion, Aritzia decided not to relocate. In addition, the Aritzin Doc Marten store in Lougheed Mall has just been remodelled as an Aritzia Clothing store. The Metrotown Centre store will remain open at this time. Store owner Andrea Molnar, who also owns Bacci’s boutique on South Granville, is replacing the Byblos store with a designer housewares shop called Bacci’s at Home. The store features high-end designer bed linen, glass and table wear, candles and gift items from France, England and Italy. In Yaletown Joining Boy's Co. General Store and Mark James Yaletown Brewery in the growing Yaletown district are the follow- ing clothing stores. Zero Gravity, 1042 Hamilton St., has directional decor and features men’s and ladies’ cloth- ing and import -CDs.
