30 - Friday, January 28, 1994 - North Shore News Driver training a must, say motorists in CAA survey AN OVERWHELMING majority of Canadian motorists believe that passing a driver education course should be required before obtaining a driving license, according to the 3.6 million member, not-for-profit Canadian Automobile Association (CAA). In its Public Policy Survey of 2,495 motorists, 90% said passing a driver education course should be mandatory and 10% said it should not. Just over three-quarters of - yespondents (78%) said that driver education courses should be offered through high schools. Of those wanting to see driver education courses offered in high schools, a majority. did not want the courses to be subsidized by taxpayers, Commenting on the survey resulis, CAA President Michael MeNeil said, “Clearly, motorists see value in being properly trained to use a car safely and effectively. They are not willing, however, to add to the alrendy excessive taxes on motoring, including federal and provincial gasoline taxes, transit taxes,*gas guzzler’ taxes and air conditioner Waxes, 1o name Sever- al.” Several CAA clubs are directly ‘involved in providing driver educa- tion, either by teaching courses or by approving driving schools that meet high standards.
