Next week is Drug Awareness Week. Is drinking or drug use common among your friends? Do you drink or use drugs? Do you think alcohol or drugs are a prob- AMIDST THE grand light displays, fireworks and huge video screens, singer Bono appears to show the people of Vancouver what U2 really can do. U2 was formed in the summer of 1978, while its members were - still pupils at Dublin’s Mount Temple school. The band consists of Bono (vocals), The Edge (guitar and piano), Larry Mullen (the babe on drums), and Adam Clayton (bass). They played in local pubs until they .released their first record, ‘U2, in 1979. By 1980, they were placed in the top five by the Hot Press (Ireland’s leading Rock . Magazine). U2 then signed with Island Records in April of 1980, and released their first single 11 O’clock Tick, Tock. Following this was their album BOY in Oc- tober of 1980. Many others followed: October (1981); WAR (1983); Under A Blood Red Sky (1983); Urforget- , Last week we asked if adults ‘are doing anything about the youth violence problem? I don’t think. adults are do- ing anything about the prob- lem. People don’t tend to take action unless it happens to them and it will because in Lynn Valley people are getting beat up every day. Something should be done or else it’s go- ing to get worse. Something should be done really fast. E. think it’s totally bypocriti- cal what adults are doing. They are complaining about all these problems that we’re causing, but they’re not willing to do anything about it. If they think we’re bad now, they should check it out if they don’t do anything about it. It really sucks how they turned down that idea of that nightclub there on Lonsdale, but they did have some points about how it is close to the SeaBus and that might bring “unwanted visitors.’’ It doesn’t matter where you go, you're going to have drugs and gangs. Adults aren't doing anything to solve youth violence. I think nightclubs should be allowed for the youth there in North Van because there's real- ly nothing better to do but hang out and hurl rocks at senior citizens. There coul be Problems with over-towners coming over and stabbing local gangs, but [ still think they should open a club for youths [YOUTH NEWS Pere "aks. table Fire (1984); Wide Awake in America (1985, only released in America); Joshua Tree (1987), which topped the charts in 22 countries; Rattle and Hum: (1988), including the second-highest grossing jilm in the U.S. and Canada; and finally their newest — and my favorite — Achtung Baby (1991). U2 is very political, and inter- nationally known. The band worked together with Steve Zandt (Bruce Spriigsteen’s guitarist) on an album titled Artist Against Apartheid and with B.B. King on other political statements. The group members are Catho- lic, except Mullen who is Protes- tant. This strongly influences their music, which is full of political statements. For example, their tour of Japan included photos of the bombing of Hiroshima for their song Unforgettable Fire. In July of 1985, U2 performed at Live Aid. And at last week’s concert here in Vancouver, con- doms were sold for $3 a box, showing their concern about the AIDS epidemic. When tickets went on sale for the Vancouver performances of U2 over a month ago, it was almost impossible to get tickets. The lineups were hours long, and people even spent the night out- side the stadium to get the wrist- bands that gave priority in ticket lineups. Everyone had bought tickets ahead of time because they ex- pected the scalpers’ tickets to be outrageously expensive. This was a hot concert! No one bought scalper tickets on the first night (Nov. 3) and so the scalpers ended up selling the tickets at a ridicu- because there is nothing better to do except go downtown. I think that adults and teenagers need to get together and discuss what's going to he done about the problem because kids alone can’t stop the violence and adults alone can’t stop the viclence. We meed to work together if we’re ever going to do anything to stop teen violence. I reatiy don’t think parents are doing anything to stop youth violence. If they de have a nightclub, kids would proba- bly stop hanging out on the streets. If they did have a nightclub, kids would just hang out there and not cause any more trouble in their neigh- borhood. [t's a really good idea to have a nightclub and they’d probably have the youth violence under control. 1 don’t think pgrents are do- ing anything. BE NK lous price of $15 for a floor ticket (the original price was $40}. People were astounded, and even more astounded the second night when tickets were regularly priced or more. The scalpers real- ized the word had gotten around and raised their prices on the se- cond night. Security was pathetic! There were tons of security guards, but this was the first concert I have been to when they didn’t frisk anybody. We could have smuggled in anything (drugs, alcohol, cam- eras and even my goldfish, in- cluding bow}}. They finally came to. their senses and threw out a lot of the drunks and rowdies. A guy seated several rows above us was physi- cally removed because he was lighting off bottle rockets and one landed in the viewers’ booth above him. The opening act was The Sugarcubes ... ugh! How awful! The word had spread from the night before about how they sucked. So when they came on stage no one seemed to care. The screams were almost unbearable when U2 came onto the stage. Everyone rose to their feet and cheered them on. All the girls screamed for Mulien, especially the two girls seated right behind us, whose voices were gone by the end of the show. One lucky girl was chosen by Bono to be on stage with him as he opened a bottle and sprayed the crowd with champagne. She kept the bottle! Technicaily, the concert was out of the ordinary. The stage was long, stretching from one side of the venue to the other, with a ramp extending into the crowd. jem for teens?
