David Byrne — The Forest, Sire Records 1991 When he’s not busy being a Talking Head or compiling world music, the dabbling dilettante gives us an orchestral piece in- spired by the Sumeric epic of Gilgamesh. Byrne’s questioning of nature's place in Western culture results in a lyrical composition that resonates with much the same hip minimal structure of a Philip Glass piece. Matraca Berg ~— Lying To The Moon, BMG Music 1990 This release stands up as one of the strongest country albums put out during the past year. Berg has the vocal ability to back tender fragility with passionate power as called for, song by song. Production by Wendy Waldman and Josh Leo is crisp and there is nota weak tune in the bunch. The title cut, Lying To The Moon, is an elemental tear-jerker of the first order. Alice In The Looking Glass, Berg's pastiche of southern women she has known, skirts maudlin sentimentality to come up as a surprisingly moving meditation on the march of time, Cary Grant used his real name in the Gunga Din role From page 34 Timid Joan Fontaine rushes into marriage with the brooding widower (Laurence Olivier) who hasn’t quite swept away the cobwebs of his late wife, Rebecca.
