The figure is given in kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity. Read Energuide label and Save money ALL HOME appliances consume energy — as much as 25 per cent of the energy used in a typical home. But for any given type of appliance, some models use far more energy than others. Simply by choosing the most energy-efficient models when you shop for new appliances, you can reduce your energy use and make a positive contribution to the health of the environment. How do you know which appli- ances are the most energy-effi- cient? It’s easy. Just read the Energuide labels. On every new appliance sold in Canada you will find a_black- and-white Energuide label, which gives the model number of the appliance and tells you the mon- thly energy use under normal operating conditions. The figure — called the Energuide rating — is given in kilowatt-hours. (kWh) of electrici- ty. A kilowatt-hour is the amount of electricity consumed by a 100-watt light bulb operating for 10 hours. Naturally, the Energuide rating is an approximation. The manu- facturers that test their products according to standards and pro- cedures developed by the Caita- dian Standards Association (CSA), do their best to simulate real home environments. But once it is installed in your home, an appliance may consume more or less energy, depending on how you use it. A’ refrigerator located near a heat source, for in- stance, or one whose cooling coils are seldom cleaned, will work harder to maintain a_ given temperature and will therefore use more energy. The federal government created the Energuide program in 1978 to help increase the energy efficiency of Canadian appliances und to reduce the demands for electricity. The program is administered by Energy, Mines and Resources Canada (EMR). To make the choice for con- sumers even easier, EMR publishes the Energuide Directory. For the six major ‘‘white’’ appli- ances, the directory lists the model numbers, the important features for each model, the model's energy rating and the cost of the electricity needed to run that model for one year.
