The Hiliside Headliner won first prize in the elementary level of the 1989 Commodore School News- Paper contest, sponsored by Computers in Education maga- zine. As a result of the newspaper’s win, Hillside, a West Vancouver school, won an Amiga 2000 com- puter, complete with 20 megabyte hard disk drive and color monitor. In addition to the contest criteria, the judges noted that the Hillside Headliner made good use of grids for column widths and lengths, crisp and clear photographic reproduction and excelient use of rules and lines. Ron Popoff, teacher adviser to the Hillside Headliner, said com- puters have played an increasingly important role in schools each ear. “Nothing grabs the attention of a student computer user like the prospect of producing professional looking banners, signs, invita- tions, reports, class projects and so on,"’ said Popoff. ‘‘At Hillside, students and teachers have found working with printing, publishing programs and the Maclntosh computer to be addic- tive and captivating. “The advent of laser writer printers and desktop publishing * Professional Service © Norco Accessories * Knowledgeable & Friendly Service 5357 Headiand Dr. WN. We saw the potential of the new technology and decided to use it to produce a school newspaper and English journal." He added that desktop publishing ‘‘became a springboard for this exciting venture’’ because it allows teachers and students the freedom to write, design and draw while keeping total control over the final product. Popoff said the first step in producing the newspaper was the writing and gathering of stories, poems, editorials and articles from English classes, student reporters and club representatives from many different students throughout the school. The copy was composed and transferred to the computer via a word processor and run through a spelling checker. The visuals used in the newspa- per were created by the students in a computer art program or found in commercially produced art. Some art work was hand drawn and scanned into the computer with a flat-bed scanner. “Throughout the two years of Hillside’s history as a middle school, students and teachers have learned a tremendous amount about publishing,” said Popoff. “Improvements could be seen as each issue went to press.”” eNO y Bikes ds grinree mare” SG PARTICIPACHION ) .
