Loggers want Dear Editor: Iam a member of North Island Citizens for Shared Resources, and I can assure Mr. Hunter and the media that we are the underdogs in the fight between forest workers and environmental activists. Urban environmentalists have such contempt for us, they think nothing of spiking trees and endanger- ing our lives to make their point. They seem to think our lives and our way of life are worthless because we are only loggers or sawmillers. The Western Canada Wilderness Committee wants to stop all coastal logging. Never mind that stopping logging will turn communities — our homes — into ghost towns. : Mr. Hunter and his friends are misleading the public with their exaggerated claims. Hunter used loaded words in his column: ‘‘carnage,’’ ‘‘Nazis,”’ “stripped hillside,’ “twisted and deformed trees.” And he has the nerve to accuse us of causing hysteria. Many leaders of the so-called environmental movement are good with words as they are well- educated and they come from privileged backgrounds. MAILBOX to share 8.C. Many of them are independently wealthy —- Peter McAllister of the Sierra Club comes to mind. He has handed his inherited wealth over to investment brokers to manage his portfolio while he looks for ways of putting us out of work. (B.C. Business Mag- azine, Dec. 1989.) Others, like Mr. Hunter, have jobs where they get paid for promoting their anti-logging views. When we attempt to tell the public there is another side to the environmental story we are belittled as nothing but pawns of the industry, or worse, Mr. Hunter compares us to Nazis. We may not be as wealthy as Mr. McAllister or as powerful as Mr. Hunter, but that does not give them — or any of the other wealthy, smug, self-righteous environmentalists — the right to attack us. We have as much right to a say in the way forests are used as Mr. Hunter and his well-heeled buddies. Logging does not have to be all or nothing. We can Share the Forests.
