SPORTS Flames torch Buckeroos IN RECENT West Coast Junior Hockey League action, the North Shore Winter Club Flames re- bounded from a 5-3 loss to the Pilots in Abbotsford Nov. 3, to edge out the Port Coquitlam Buckereos 4-2 on home ice Satur- day, Nov. 4. And _ the power play was as pivotal in their victory at home as it was in their loss on the road. In Saturday's 4-2 win at the Winter Club, the Flames opened the scoring with a short-handed goal by Kevin Bubr from Scott Gordon and Brian Lee six minutes into the game to produce the only scoring of the period. Just over a minute into the se- cond period a power-play goal by Gordon stretched the Flames lead to 2-0, dut the Buckeroos countered five minutes later, scor- ing with the man advantage to close out the scoring in the period leaving the Flames in front 2-1 after two. It took the Flames only thirteen seconds into the third period to go up 3-1 as Brad Costa scored from John Cox and Andrew Merilees on the power play, and then Merilees added another with the man ad- vantage at 6:11 for a 4-1 Flame Margin. The Buckeroos added the final goal of the game scoring on the power play at 8:11. The Flames outshot the Buckeroos 32-30 with Kevin Rad- bourne turning in a solid perfor- mance in goal for the Fiames. In the Abbotsford game, after falling behind 2-0 by 8:17 of the first period, the Flames replied with two unanswered goals — Gordon from Merilees at 9:48 and then Costa from Cox and Buhr at 11:55 for a 2-2 split heading into the second. After a scoreless second period, the Pilots pulled ahead at 2:11 of the final frame, but the Flames drew even again at 8:11 with a goal by Buhr from Wade Bartok. But the Pilots sealed the Flames fate with power-play goals at 7:24 and 12:49 for the 5-3 final.
