Crimes and Misdemeanors *** % (Oricon) Rated M (at the Oakridge Cinema) P On the Bergman side is the melodramatic story of Judah Rosenthal (Martin Landau), a tespected ophthalmologist who is staring at a bleak prospect -- ex- posure. His distraught, clinging film review mistress, Delores (Anjelica Houston) is nizking tentative stabs at revealing their arfaiz to his wife, Miriam (Claire Bloorn). As if that weren’t enough to kill the passion, she threatens to disclose his finan- cial indiscretions unless he gets a divorce. Judah turns to his rabbi friend, Ben (Sam Waterston) who suggests he confess and ask forgiveness. However, his brother (erry Or- bach) offers to “handle the prob- lem.” Meanwhile ... Clifford Stern (Woody Allen) is nauseated by Lester, his brother- reviously, from film to film, Woody Allen seesawed between New York comedies and Scandinavian angst, but here you get a double feature. in-law (Alan Alda), a TV sitcom producer whose success has gone straight to his ego. Halley Reed (Mia Farrow), an assistant on the profile he’s shooting, is intrigued and flattered by the producer’s flirtation. As genuinely funny as Clifford is, his lifestyle of Chinese take-outs and classic movies can’t be censidered a career booster. And Hatley is ambitious. Allen intercuts the two storylines to bounce comedy and drama off each other and reflect his unique observations on love, Gad and moral codes. To be sure, it’s a cynical message of good being punished while bad rides first class, but the sheer style and wit make this one of Woody’s best. Madame Sousatzka *** (Cineplex Odeon Home Video) Rated M Shirley MacLaine stars in the title role, a demanding piano teacher with an excessive nature, barking at her pupils to reach perfection. She tells her newest prodigy, Manek (Navin Chowdnry), ‘I don’t just teach piano, ! teach haw to live,’ aiid proceeds to not only dress the fifteen-year-old, but to alienate him from his equally possessive mother (Shabana Az- mi). The boy soon finds his Soyalties being torn between pur- suing a lucrative concert career SHIRLEY MACLAINE does some engaging character acting in the title role of the film Madame Sousatzka, now cut in video. and Madame S's life lessons. The role is a real showcase for Ma :Laine, but newcomer Chowdhry gives an equally amaz- ing performance in another of director John Sctilesinger’s (Mid- night Cowboy) fine character studies.
