The World Downhill at Whistler is slated for Feb. 25, with the Molson Super G scheduled for Feb. 26. The two races, for the LaVazza Ski Alpine World Cups, will be the final races on the 1989 World Cup circuit and will decide the overall Downhill and Super G champions. Race chairman Dave Murray says ‘‘everything is looking good*’ for a successful two days of racing. **We installed $50,000 worth of additicnal safety equipment at a new part of the Carousel,”’ said Murray, ‘“‘and we’ve changed the last one-half kilometre of the course leading into the finish line, which will make it much more challenging for the competitors and much more exciting for the spectators."° The Whistler course, just under three kilometres long with a ver- tical drop of just under 1,000 feet, is ranked one of the top three in technical difficulty and one of the top two in speed content on the World Cup circuit. “We've built a very interesting course with interesting terrain,’’ said Murray, a former member of Canada’s national ski team who now serves as Director of Skiing for Whistler Mountain. The Molson World Downhill and Super G will also feature the newly-crowned World Champion in both disciplines. Lapointe takes ski cup CAROLINE LAPOINTE of Handsworth high school had more than a five second margin of vic- tory Feb. 16 at the North Shore high school ski championships at Whistler Mountain in her win in the senior girls’ experienced cate- gory. Lapointe’s time was 1:09.6- 1:14.7, Windsor and Argyle placed second and third respectively. Alex Ward of Sentinel school had the fastest run of the day, 28.79 seconds, to win the senior boys’ experienced race. In the junior boys’ experienced category, Richard Dye of Argyle placed first. In other categories, Jason Chepman of Handsworth finished first in senior boys’; Darren Nott of Balmoral, first in junior boys’; Stefano Rista of Sentinel, first in juvenile boys’; and Andy Franko of Windsor placed first in bantam boys’ Grade eight student Stephanie Villard and Grade 9 Wayne Walker, both of Handsworth school, were the most promising racers, with their high finishes in senior experienced categories. In the girls’ junior experienced category, meanwhile, Chandra Eyton of Seycove came (first; Christie Shannon of Sentinel, placed first in senior novice; and Lesley Weeks of Brackendale finished first in junior novice. Handsworth, Sutherland and Windsor schools’ boys’ teams ad- vance to the B.C. High School championships at Mt. Washington, Vancouver Island, from March 8 to 10, along with Handsworth, Argyle and Windsor schools’ girls’ teams.
