‘Spree 17 - Sunday, February 12, 1989 - North Shore News F'ASHION BEAUTY SECOND IN MISS TEEN VANCOUVER CONTEST Personality takes precedence THE YOUNG woman who walks away with the Miss Teen Vancouver Lower Mainland crown Monday night will be judged on her personality before her beauty, says the North Shore’s longtime beauty pageant expert, Gertie Todd. Although the judges give 35 marks for beauty of face and fig- ure compared with 25 for person- ality, Todd, who has organized the Miss Teen Vancouver Lower Mainland Pageant for the past 10 years and the Miss North Shore Pageant for the last 38, says beau- ty is secondary. “I told one Miss Teen Van- couver that she didn’t win because she was the most beautiful but because she was the girl next door,’’ says Todd. ‘‘The important thing is that she has to have an outgoing personality and be able to get along with her fellow contes- tants and me.” To qualify as a contestant, par- ticipants must face a host of strict entry requirements. They must be between 14 and 17% years old, must not be or have been married and must not have children. School marks don’t figure in the requirements, but Todd says the pageant doesn’t attract people with r marks. “I get the kind of girl who is re- ally busy — dancing, singing, play- ing sports.” A contestant’s na- tionality does not figure in entry requirements either. ‘‘The pageant is open to all aationalities. It doesn’t matter if you're white, black or beautiful.’’ At 8 p.m. Feb. 13 at Centennial Theatre, one of 20 Lower Mainland contestants wil! get that once-in-a-lifetime chance to walk away with roses and the sought- after Miss Teen Vancouver crown. Otherwise known as the ‘the tiger,”’ Todd enforces strict rules and regulations which include rehearsals twice a week for the last seven weeks. Although she has high standards, Todd does not rule with an iron fist: ‘* I have to give and take 2 little,’* she says. Todd’s lively spirit and dedica- tion to work has rubbed off on the people she calls ‘her girls’ — the young women she coaches for the pageants. “It takes up three-quarters of my life, but it’s a God-giving gift to work with young people to- day,” says Todd.
