Ambieside remains
the heart of W. Van

IF THERE is a heart to the:
sprawling municipality of West
Vancouver, it must be Ambleside.
Sandwiched between  Dundarave
Village and Park Royal, Ambleside
is the centre from which all else
grew.

Today five blocks of shops and
restaurants between 18th and 13th
on both -Marine and Bellevue
comprise the business sector of a
village that was once litte more
than a ferry terminal and_ general
store,

What was once a ragtag collec-
tion of summer cottages sinking in
peat bog is now a thriving com-
munity of over 9,000 residents. -

The village grew 30 rapidly that
highrises'. replaced many of: the
original homes, but the carly pio-
necrs had the foresight to protect
much of the shoreline. for public
use,

A seawall lining the beach all the
way to Dundarave begins at the

eastern edge of Ambieside and at:

diamonds behind the concession
stands provide hours of enjoyment
and the fitness track at the eastern
end provides a logical end to a jog

The park | stretches ‘from the
Capilano River mouth — where -
during the salmon runs. members
of the Squamish Indian Band can

_ be seen knee deep in the chilly river -

spearing their harvest’ —- to the
3th Street entrance.

But one, block west, just past the
Hollyburn Sailing Club, is another
fascinating spot. In 1914, the ferry
used to dock here and the site,

_which was. privately owned, has

The old building which began as
the ferry terminal later became the

bus depot and. office to the blue

buses of West Vancouver will takes
its place among. the heritage
buildings in the area,

ing stages for a major revitaliza-
tion effort that. will improve side-
walks and storefronts, and. maybe
see the re-establishment of a ferry
