The following list of common
deciduous trees are the types that
may require your attention in
order to protect your home and
family from harm due to fallen
trees and limbs.

1. Alder: Alders are probably
our most common native tree and
are the most frequent deciduous
tree to break and fall in winter
winds. Alders are very prone to in-
sects and disease and often have
centre rot or dieback from wounds
or disease.

We frequently have to remove
alder trees from houses, garages or
cars and they can cause a lot of
damage when they fall. Tail single
stem alders are the most common
problem.

These have a tendency to snap
low in the trunk and come down
during windstorms. On alders with
wider canopies, heavy branch
breakage is common, particularly
on those trees with dieback or
weak crotches.

If you wish to maintain alders,
they should be pruned and reduced
every year to remove dead wood
and cross limbs. They should be
treated for insects and diseases asd
often should be cabled or braced.

Otherwise, we recommend that
you have them removed. Alder, by
the way, (like birch, maple and
cherry) is excellent firewood.

2. Cottonwoods: These large
trees do not often fall but large
broken branches and broken
trunks are very common. These

eral hundred pounds.

They can do very extensive
damage when they split or break
during storms. In the winter, these
trees are even more susceptible to
breakage as they become quite
brittle.

We kave a strong bias against
having cottonwoods growing in
urban areas, and nearly always
recommend removal, but, if you
have one and you like it: protect
yourself by having it reduced and

large high limbs removed.

3. Maples: Big Leaf Maples are
a common and popular native tree.
Maples, unfortunately, self prune
when they are mature by dying
back in the upper crown. This
deadwood should be removed
every year and maples should be
drop crotched to keep height to a
reasonable level.
